Armand ist ein Loser, er hat keine Wohnung, pennt auch mal im Auto wildfremder Menschen. Sein Halbbruder Guillaume ist Polizist. Eines Tages stirbt der Vater der beiden, Armand interessiert das nicht, er will nicht zur Beerdigung kommen. Zu seinem Vater hatte er eigentlich keine nennenswerte Beziehung. Und weil Armand eben ein Loser ist – das schwarze Schaf ist, erbt halt auch Guillaume die einträgliche Bowlingbahn des Vaters, Bowling Saturne. Weil der aber keine Zeit hat, sich um den Laden zu kümmern, überlässt er ihn Armand, halb aus Mitleid, halb aus Notwendigkeit. Der weigert sich erst, aber da seine Lebenssituation ihn schier verzweifeln lässt, sagt er schließlich zu und will sich um den Laden kümmern, inklusive des – auch das noch – Köters des Alten. Armand macht sich in der Wohnung des Vaters breit – und nun lernen wir einiges über diesen: Er scheint wohl ein regelrechter Lebemann gewesen zu sein, kam rum, Großwildjägerfotos hängen in der schnieken Wohnung. Die Schlangenlederjacke seines Vaters zieht er gleich an, um bei den Mädels in der Bowlingbahn Eindruck zu schinden. Die Geschäftsregeln der Branche interessieren ihn nicht, er scheint sich nur dafür zu interessieren, Frauen abzuschleppen. Prompt schindet er bei der jungen, attraktiven Gloria Eindruck. Sie verbringen eine leidenschaftliche Nacht in der Wohnung seines Vaters, aber Armand hat sich nicht unter Kontrolle, sein Verhalten eskaliert, er wird immer gewalttätiger, verprügelt sie – und schlägt sie schließlich tot. Nun muss er die Leiche wegschaffen…
Mit dem Mordfall wird schon bald Guillaume betraut. Glorias Leiche wird auf einem Friedhof gefunden – doch schon bald werden weitere Leichen entdeckt. Guillaume hat es mit einer regelrechten Mordserie zu tun. Ein Abgrund tut sich auf – für beide Brüder. Tief aus der Familienvergangenheit drängt sich die Rolle des Vaters als rücksichtsloser Großwildjäger in die gewalttätige Gegenwart hinein…
Die Regisseurin Patricia Mazuy geht ein hohes erzählerisches Risiko ein, indem sie schon im ersten Viertel Armand als haltlosen, brutalen Mörder offenbart. Doch ist es durchaus konsequent. Nach den Regeln des Genres müsste der wahre Täter bis ins letzte Viertel verborgen werden – um dann überraschend als der Mörder offenbart zu werden. Doch diese Handlungsstruktur ist seit langem abgegriffen und schal – umso erzählerisch gewagter ist es, so früh mit der Wahrheit herauszurücken.
„Bowling Saturne“ ist und will so viel, dass es einem immer wieder den Atem verschlägt: Thriller, Pulp, Film Noir, stilisiertes Familiendrama; es geht um Vergewaltigung, Macht über Frauen, über Tiere, es geht irgendwie auch um die Kritik an Großwildjagd, um ein Drama zwischen Brüdern – wobei all diese gesellschaftlichen Themen im Genrekonstrukt aufgegriffen und bis zur Künstlichkeit überhöht werden. „Das Abenteuer des Films bestand darin, einer Tragödie in der Gegenwart zu folgen, einem „Film Noir“, der in der heutigen Welt verwurzelt ist – etwas von heute in einen Film zu bringen, der sich auf primitive Weise mit Erbe und Gewalt auseinandersetzt“, sagt die Regisseurin Patricia Mazuy.
Man kämpft immer wieder mit dem stets wechselnden Verhältnis des Films zur Realität – aber am Ende ist die fiebrige Atmosphäre, das Flirren, die Gewalt das, was einen gefangen nimmt. „Der Rhythmus, die Bilder und die Art und Weise, wie die Schauspieler ihre Figuren bewohnen, schaffen einen Film, der von Anfang bis Ende wie ein gedämpfter, angespannter Albtraum ist, mit beunruhigender Stille. Wir befinden uns in der realen Welt, aber mit einer undurchsichtigen, traumhaften Atmosphäre, in der Worte selten sind und in gefangenen Körpern widerhallen“, erzählt Mazuy.

Armand is a loser, he doesn’t have an apartment, sometimes sleeps in the car of complete strangers. His half-brother Guillaume is a police officer. One day their father dies, Armand doesn’t care, he doesn’t want to come to the funeral. He actually had no relationship worth mentioning with his father. And because Armand is a loser – the black sheep is, Guillaume inherits his father’s lucrative bowling alley, Bowling Saturne. But because he doesn’t have time to take care of the shop, he leaves it to Armand, half out of pity, half out of necessity. He refuses at first, but since his living situation is making him desperate, he finally agrees and wants to take care of the shop, including the old man’s mutt – that too. Armand spreads out in his father’s apartment – and now we’re learning a lot about him: He seems to have been a real bon vivant, got around, big game hunter photos hang in the snazzy apartment. He puts on his father’s snakeskin jacket to impress the girls at the bowling alley. He doesn’t care about the business rules of the industry, he only seems interested in picking up women. He promptly makes an impression on the young, attractive Gloria. They spend a passionate night in his father’s apartment, but Armand can’t control himself, his behavior escalates, he becomes more and more violent, beats her – and finally kills her. Now he has to get rid of the body…
Guillaume is soon entrusted with the murder case. Gloria’s body is found in a cemetery – but soon more bodies are discovered. Guillaume is dealing with a veritable series of murders. An abyss opens up – for both brothers. Deep in the family past, the role of the father as a ruthless big game hunter pushes its way into the violent present…
The director Patricia Mazuy takes a high narrative risk by revealing Armand as a baseless, brutal murderer in the first quarter. But it is quite consistent. According to the rules of the genre, the real culprit would have to be hidden to the last quarter – only to be surprisingly revealed as the murderer. But this plot structure has long been worn and stale – so it is narratively daring to come out with the truth so early.
“Bowling Saturne” is and wants so much that it always takes your breath away: thriller, pulp, film noir, stylized family drama; it’s about rape, power over women, over animals, it’s also somehow about criticism of big game hunting, about a drama between brothers – whereby all these social themes are taken up in the genre construct and exaggerated to the point of artificiality. „The adventure of the film was to follow a tragedy in the present, a ‚film noir‘ rooted in today’s world – to bring something of today into a film that grapples with heritage and violence in primitive ways.“ , says director Patricia Mazuy.
You struggle again and again with the film’s ever-changing relationship to reality – but in the end it’s the feverish atmosphere, the shimmering, the violence that captivates you. “The rhythm, the imagery, and the way the actors inhabit their characters create a film that is like a hushed, tense nightmare from start to finish, with an unsettling stillness. We are in the real world, but with an opaque, dreamlike atmosphere where words are rare and echo in imprisoned bodies,” says Mazuy.
