Tony O’Shea is an Irish photographer, born in 1947, one of the most important contemporary Irish documentary photographers. O’Shea hails from County Kerry, a county in the far southwest of the country. He grew up on Valentia Island, Dairbhre in Irish, a sparsely populated island (population: 664). Significant events are rare there, perhaps the last time when Charles Lindbergh first landed in Europe on his Atlantic flight in 1927.
Tony O’Shea (who bears the same name as a famous English darts player) returns there once a year from his home in Dublin – for the traditional „Kerry Beagle drag hunt“. The Beagles are in fact an ancient Irish breed of dog bred for this very purpose and have always been trained by the local hunters. Consequently, the “Kerry Beagle Association” is also thanked in the appendix.
For thirty years, O’Shea accompanied hunters and their dogs on the hunt. And O’Shea achieves an impressive closeness and intimacy with his photographs – which is simply due to the fact that the hunters are his friends, his neighbors, his relatives. O’Shea is a real insider, he is part of the whole, a great prerequisite for making authentic pictures.
O’Shea’s series is shaped by its three protagonists: the hunters, the dogs – and the landscape. The hunters mostly come from families that have been involved in hunting and beagle breeding for several generations. There have been rivalries and tensions between families for generations. The dogs are brave, courageous, take their job very seriously, jump into the water, drift through the bushes – and roam through the harsh, barren, impressive landscape and the equally rough weather of County Kerry. „There is little forgiveness in this landscape for man or hound,“ writes Paul O’Sullivan in the afterword.
„O’Shea combines the approach of a poetic European documentary tradition – an empathetic, if at times almost Beckettian sense of the absurd – with an anthropologist’s eye for social realities,“ says the Photo Museum Ireland, probably the country’s most important photographic institution. „In these hard-hitting, eloquent pictures he has captured the many complexities of a country undergoing profound change, at the same time, securing for himself a key place in the canon of Irish photography.“
In rough black and white, O’Shea impressively documents the hunt. The dramaturgy of the book consistently follows the dramaturgy of the hunt. The first twenty photos show the waiting, the preparation, the time before the hunt – and then it starts. The dogs run, jump, hunt, rush, hop into the water, exhaust themselves to the point of exhaustion. The mood of those involved (largely male) is boiling, screams of anger, cheering, enthusiasm, cheering, in the end there are even trophies for the winners – yes there are winners, in the narrower sense the whole thing is a sporting event. O’Shea conveys emotions to us, we are there, always close to man and dog. The photographer never tries to overwhelm us with a dramatic image composition, the effect follows the authenticity of the series of images. „The photographer finds the authentic in the faces he captures, sculpted by lived experience and environment,“ says Paul O’Sullivan in the afterword of this extraordinary photobook. O’Shea succeeds in creating a powerful, impressive work with „Kingdom of Hounds“.

Tony O’Shea ist ein irischer Fotograf, Jahrgang 1947, einer der wichtigsten gegenwärtigen irischen Dokumentarfotografen. O’Shea stammt aus County Kerry, einer Grafschaft im äußersten Südwesten des Landes. Er wuchs in Valentia Island, irisch Dairbhre, auf, einer spärlich besiedelten Insel (Population: 664). Bedeutende Ereignisse gibt es dort selten, das letzte Mal vielleicht, als Charles Lindbergh bei seinem Atlantikflug im Jahr 1927 hier das erste Mal Europa erreichte.
Dorthin kehrt Tony O’Shea (der denselben Namen trägt wie ein berühmter englischer Dartspieler) einmal im Jahr von seinem Wohnort Dublin zurück – und zwar zur traditionellen „Kerry Beagle drag hunt“, also einer Jagd mit, so lässt sich nachlesen, „künstlich erzeugter Witterung“, eben mit Hunden. Die Beagles sind in der Tat eine alte irische Hunderasse, die genau zu diesem Zweck gezüchtet worden waren, und die immer von den örtlichen Jägern trainiert wurden. Dreißig Jahre lang begleitete O’Shea die Jäger und ihre Hunde bei der Jagd. Und O’Shea gelingt mit seinen Fotografien eine beeindruckende Nähe und Intimität – die schlicht darauf zurückzuführen ist, dass die Jäger seine Freunde, seine Nachbarn, seine Verwandten ist. O’Shea ist ein regelrechter Insider, er ist Teil des Ganzen, eine grandiose Voraussetzung dafür, authentische Bilder zu machen.
O’Sheas Serie ist von deren drei Protagonisten geprägt: Die Jäger, die Hunde – und die Landschaft. Die Jäger entstammen meist Familien, die schon seit etlichen Generation mit der Jagd und der Beaglezucht beschäftigt sind. In rauem Schwarzweiß dokumentiert O’Shea eindrücklich die Jagd. Die Dramaturgie des Buches folgt dabei konsequent der Dramaturgie der Jagd. Die ersten gut zwanzig Fotos zeigen das Abwarten, die Vorbereitung, die Zeit vor der Jagd – und dann geht es los. Die Hunde rennen, springen, jagen, hetzen, hüpfen ins Wasser, verausgaben sich bis zur Erschöpfung. Die Stimmung der Beteiligten (weitgehend Männersache) kocht, Wutschreie, Anfeuerung, Begeisterung, Jubel, am Ende gibt es gar Pokale für die Gewinner – ja es gibt Gewinner, im engeren Sinne ist das Ganze eine Sportveranstaltung. O’Shea vermittelt uns Emotionen, wir sind dabei, immer nah an Mann und Hund. Nie versucht der Fotograf uns mit dramatischem Bildaufbau zu überwältigen, die Wirkung folgt der Authentizität der Bilderserie. „The photographer finds the authentic in the faces he captures, sculpted by lived experience and environment“, heißt es im Nachwort. O’Shea gelingt mit „Kingdom of Hounds“ ein kraftvolles, ursprüngliches Werk. „His vision orchestrates the play of sun and shade and shadow.
