Franck und Meriem leben in prekären Ver­hält­nis­sen in einem Wohn­wa­gen in den Ban­lieues von Paris. Fünf Kinder haben sie, obwohl sie sich das eigentlich gar nicht leis­ten kön­nen. Und jet­zt bekommt Franck auch noch Ärg­er mit der Polizei, weil er als Schrottsamm­ler gemein­sam mit seinem Kol­le­gen Stress auf dem Schrottplatz gemacht und dann auf der Flucht einen Unfall verur­sacht hat. Nun braucht er drin­gend einen Anwalt, um den hat sich Meriem geküm­mert, aber auch den kön­nen sie sich natür­lich nicht leis­ten. In der Anklage wird aber wohl schw­eres Geschütz aufge­fahren wer­den. Julien, der Anwalt, hat ein gutes Herz, küm­mert sich den­noch um den Fall und legt sich vor Gericht ins Zeug. Franck kommt glimpflich davon. Nach dem Urteil holt Juliens Frau Anna, eben­falls Anwältin – Immo­bilien­an­wältin, ihren Mann ab, und weil Franck schlecht zu Fuß ist, fahren sie (bzw. fährt Anna, Julien hat wegen Alko­hol am Steuer näm­lich keinen Führerschein mehr) Franck mit dem Audi auch noch nach Hause in die ärm­liche Wohn­wa­gen­sied­lung am Stad­trand. Höflich wie sie sind, steigen die bei­den noch aus und ler­nen die Fam­i­lie ken­nen, samt einäugigem Hund. Als Geschenk gibt’s noch eine Flasche Schnaps.

Francks Sit­u­a­tion wird aber nicht bess­er: Sein Trans­porter, mit dem er ille­gal Schrott gesam­melt hat, den er zu Geld gemacht hat, ist nun selb­st Schrott. Die finanzielle Grund­lage der Fam­i­lie ist nun weg. Und dann auch noch das: Meriem ist wieder schwanger. Kind Num­mer sechs ist unter­wegs. Und da sie sich das keines­falls leis­ten kön­nen, und da Julien und Anna ja keine Kinder haben, kam Franck und Meriem doch eine Idee: Wie wäre es, wenn sie das Kind nehmen wür­den? Bei ihnen würde es ja ein schönes Leben haben? Abtreiben geht ja eh nicht, sie sind katholisch. Aber das sei ja Men­schen­han­del, lehnt Julien entsch­ieden ab. Aber ander­er­seits, mal nach­fra­gen, wieviel Geld sie denn the­o­retisch ver­lan­gen wür­den, kann man ja mal. Auf die Idee kom­men Anna und Julien dann doch. Und tauchen in der Wohn­wa­gen­sied­lung auf. Sie kön­nten das Kind ja adop­tieren, lautet ihr Vorschlag, das wäre der legale Weg. Franck und Meriem wür­den die Eltern sein, aber aufwach­sen würde das Kind bei Julien und Anna. Aber Meriem lehnt das ab, sie will nicht als jemand daste­hen, der das Kind weg­gibt. Ihr Plan war, der Ver­wandtschaft zu sagen, das Kind wäre bei der Geburt gestor­ben. Es ein­fach wegzugeben, dafür hätte kein­er Ver­ständ­nis, noch nicht mal sie selb­st. Ent­täuscht ziehen sie ab, aber Anna hat Blut geleckt. Nun han­delt sie auf eigene Faust und bietet Franck 30.000 Euro für die ille­gale Vari­ante an. Zu viel, lehnt der kon­stern­ierte Franck ab. Meriem sieht das anders. Seit sieben Jahren ver­suchen sie es mit kün­stlich­er Befruch­tung, nie hat es geklappt. Ihre Verzwei­flung und der Kinder­wun­sch ist zu groß. Schon beim näch­sten Fraue­narzt­ter­min nimmt sie Anna mit und gibt sie als ihre Schwest­er aus, und: Meriem gibt sich beim Arzt als Anna aus, benutzt deren Krankenkassenkarte. Nun ist qua­si Anna schwanger. Mit dem Fötus ist alles in Ord­nung, aber einen Wun­sch hat Meriem: Als gute Christin würde sie wollen, dass das Kind getauft wird. Geht klar, meint Anna, die mit Reli­gion eigentlich gar nichts am Hut hat. Und am Abend offen­bart Anna ihrem Ehe­mann ihre „Schwanger­schaft“. Doch Julien ist entset­zt. Er ste­ht auf der Seite des Geset­zes und der Moral, sagt er.

Lange weiß man nicht, in welche Rich­tung sich der Film entwick­eln wird. Es ist lange Zeit noch nicht ein­mal klar, ob „The Sixth Child“ ein Gen­re­film ist, ein Dra­ma, ein Kri­mi – oder etwa eine Sozial­studie. Diese Bewe­gung auf dem schmalen Grat macht aber ger­ade die Stärke des Films aus. Wahrschein­lich verbindet er das alles. Léopold Legrand gelingt mit seinem ersten Lang­film eine wun­der­volle, berührende, aber auch aufwüh­lende Geschichte um den Wun­sch, ein Kind zu haben, über Moral und Eigen­nutz, über Schuld und Strafe, über innere Zwiespälte, in denen alle vier Pro­tag­o­nistIn­nen steck­en – und mit denen jed­er und jede auf unter­schiedliche Art und Weise zurechtkommt.

Franck and Meriem live in pre­car­i­ous cir­cum­stances in a mobile home in the out­skirts of Paris. They have five chil­dren, although they real­ly can’t afford it. And now Franck is also get­ting into trou­ble with the police because, as a scrap col­lec­tor, he and his col­league caused stress at the scrap yard and then caused an acci­dent while try­ing to escape. Now he urgent­ly needs a lawyer, Meriem has tak­en care of him, but of course they can’t afford him either. In the indict­ment, how­ev­er, heavy artillery will prob­a­bly be used. Julien, the lawyer, has a good heart, but still takes care of the case and puts in the effort in court. Franck gets off light­ly. After the ver­dict, Julien’s wife Anna, also a lawyer – real estate lawyer, picks up her hus­band, and because Franck walks bad­ly, they dri­ve (or Anna dri­ves, Julien no longer has a driver’s license because of drunk dri­ving) Franck with the Audi too home to the poor trail­er park on the out­skirts. But Franck’s sit­u­a­tion does­n’t get any bet­ter: his van, which he used to ille­gal­ly col­lect junk that he turned into mon­ey, is now junk itself. The finan­cial basis of the fam­i­ly is now gone. And then there’s this: Meriem is preg­nant again. Child num­ber six is ​​on the way. And since they can’t afford it, and since Julien and Anna don’t have any chil­dren, Franck and Meriem came up with an idea: How about tak­ing the child? Would­n’t life be nice with them? You can’t have an abor­tion any­way, they’re Catholic. But that’s human traf­fick­ing, Julien firm­ly rejects. But on the oth­er hand, you can ask how much mon­ey they would the­o­ret­i­cal­ly ask for. Anna and Julien then come up with the idea. And show up at the trail­er park. You could adopt the child, is her sug­ges­tion, that would be the legal way. Franck and Meriem would be the par­ents, but the child would grow up with Julien and Anna. But Meriem refus­es, she does­n’t want to be seen as giv­ing away the child. Her plan was to tell rel­a­tives that the child had died in child­birth. Sim­ply giv­ing it away, no one would under­stand, not even she her­self. Dis­ap­point­ed, they leave, but Anna has tast­ed blood. Now she acts on her own and offers Franck 30,000 euros for the ille­gal vari­ant. Too much, the dis­mayed Franck refus­es. Meriem sees it dif­fer­ent­ly. They have been try­ing arti­fi­cial insem­i­na­tion for sev­en years, but it has nev­er worked. Your despair and the desire to have chil­dren is too great. At the next gyne­col­o­gist appoint­ment she takes Anna with her and pass­es her off as her sis­ter, and: Meriem pre­tends to be Anna to the doc­tor and uses her health insur­ance card. Anna is now preg­nant. Every­thing is fine with the fetus, but Meriem has one wish: as a good Chris­t­ian, she would want the child to be bap­tized. That’s fine, says Anna, who actu­al­ly has noth­ing to do with reli­gion. And in the evening Anna reveals her “preg­nan­cy” to her hus­band. But Julien is appalled. He’s on the side of the law and moral­i­ty, he says.

For a long time we don’t know in which direc­tion the film will devel­op. For a long time it’s not even clear whether „The Sixth Child” is a genre film, a dra­ma, a crime thriller – or a social study. How­ev­er, walk­ing a fine line is pre­cise­ly what makes the film so strong. He prob­a­bly ties it all togeth­er. With his first fea­ture film, Léopold Legrand suc­ceeds in cre­at­ing a won­der­ful, touch­ing but also stir­ring sto­ry about the desire to have a child, about moral­i­ty and self­ish­ness, about guilt and pun­ish­ment, about inner con­flicts in which all four pro­tag­o­nists are stuck – and with which every­one and each copes in dif­fer­ent ways.
